I read this book as part of the Tomes and Treasures a Dungeon's and Dragon's inspired readathon hosted by The Creepy Geek on Bookstagram. I have not decided which prompt I'm going to fulfill with this book at the time of writing this review.
This book has been on my radar since it was announced at the beginning of the year! But thanks to Realmathon last month alot of people read it and it peaked my interest even more! Thankfully the library and libby Gods came through and my hold came in at the end of March. I'm a little overdue on returning this book tho (sorry next person in line) which is why I prioritized it to be the first book I read in April!
This book did not disappoint and it definitely lived up to the hype for me personally! Was it a perfect book no, there were some things that annoyed me / rubbed me the wrong way with the main character Freya. And I definitely saw one of the big reveals at the end coming. But based on vibes this book was 5 stars for me and I cannot wait for book 2!! I definitely want to add this one to my collection!
There are many different God's and prophecies in this story that I have a hard time understanding myself let alone explaining so I highly recommend listening to the audiobook for this book to try and get a better understanding of everything thats discussed.
I think the author wanted the reader to feel a certain way about Snorri and and his wife Ylva. Snorri is very set in his belief that having Freya as his wife and in his control is his destiny to be the ruler of all the kingdoms and he makes a-lot of decisions based on this. There is a lot of death and sacrifice in this story in the name of Freya.
Ylva is portrayed in a way that makes the reader think she is jealous of Freya and betraying her husband to the enemy. I don't think she is 100% innocent but we find out at the end that she is not the traitor.
Bjorn is an interesting character and honestly I was uneasy about his motivations from the start. Snorri tells him multiple times that it is his destiny to watch over and guard Freya wherever she goes. And that if he doesn't do this he will no longer be the Heir to the throne. But Bjorn doesn't want to rule. Overtime a short period of time a forbidden romance starts between them. Even tho I was weary of Bjorn he does treat Freya decently. BUT I still suspected that his motivations weren't 100% true to his fathers wishes...he is not who he seems to be...
Freya is very rash in her decision making and doesn't always think things through before she reacts to things. Its almost like she has split personalities at times and it was very difficult to understand her reasoning for things especially when she was in battle. She also stays loyal to people who treat her badly on multiple occasions especially when it comes to her family. She just doesn't think before she does things and it made me roll my eyes on multiple occasions. It's hard to feel sorry for someone who makes the same poor decision more than once. She also questioned why people judge her for those decisions on more than one occasion.
Over all I had a great time with this book! The last few chapters ended in a way that make me want to pick up book 2 right away! I know we will probably have to wait a while for it to come out BUT I'll be ready and waiting!!
