The Start of Me and You
by Emery Lord
A couple of times already, I've seen discourse about how books catered mainly to teenage audiences aren't considered "serious" or as worthy of praise as a classic book, for example, and I really don't get it - to me, every book has its own potential, realm of possibilities to be unfolded, characters to build and lessons to teach, and for its quality to be judged under the pretext of something so trivial... I find that annoying, honestly. Because after reading books like The Start of Me and You, that tell light-hearted yet emotional stories with well-developed main characters who, even at a young age, manage to acknowledge their flaws and also learn important aspects of life; that show healthy and supportive friendships amongst women; that present honest relationships between parents and their children, flawed but never absent of love on either part; that create meaningful connections between people with different interests; that highlight what a romance should be and what it shouldn't, all through a genuine love blossoming between two people who respect each other and share a bond deeper than physical attraction... I just can't imagine being that dismissive of a story with such a tender power.
With that being said, I enjoyed a lot of this book. Definitely not mind-blowing, but it was really sweet and inspiring and took my mind off of stressful responsibilities and anxiety in general (what more could I ask for?)
