The Mephisto Club by Tess Gerritsen

alternating narrators delve into the story of a series of grisly murders. one is boston medical examiner maura isles, the other is detective jane rizzoli. maybe it was sloppy reading on my part, but i kept getting them confused at first. one has a loving husband and young daughter, the other has parents who are divorcing and an infatuation with a catholic priest. their personal lives are put on hold by this bizarre case, and a killer that scrawls latin phrases and religious symbols at his crime scenes. i think it is maura who is drawn up into hte "mephisto club", which is a group of academics with expertise on the obscure phrases and religious rites that seem to be driving the killer. they think he is an ancient evil unleased, and while the investigators aren't happy with their meddling, it seems more and more like they are right as the case unfolds.
