The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson
4.0

This was my first Brandon Sanderson book, and after reading this book, it won't be my last.

That being said, let's get the negatives out of the way first. Joel is a very awkward teenager and is written like so. Some of the written engagements feel forced in order for the reader to feel the awkwardness, but it's not too forced.

The ending was quickly written and I felt like there should/could have been another 50 pages. I'm not saying I want longer books, especially when they're geared to a younger audience, but the last two-three chapters needed to be fleshed out in more details. It's obvious that the ending was written with the intention of a sequel, but given Sanderson's workload, I'm not expecting it any time soon (and I'm already late to the party after reading this one almost ten years after it's release).

This book and its magic system were superb, granted I felt that 2d chalk monsters as a little unrealistic, but it's not too terrible that it becomes unreadable. It reminded me of, the Nickelodeon show, ChalkZone, which I greatly enjoyed as a kid. I will definitely pick up the next in the series when it inevitably gets released and I plan on continuing with more of Brandon's works.

One spoiler: I thought it was odd that a new line was discovered that was inherently the same style as the Line of Vigor, but instead of a wavy design, it's just sharp curves. I feel like that would be accidentally discovered at some point prior to the timeline of this story, but I digress.
