Tears in the Water
by Margherita Scialla
Review done for @followthereader2016 in French too
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I can't really say that I enjoyed this book because some parts were really hard for me to read (I actually didn't expect to find this subject upsetting) but I think it was well done in it's realism.
I must admit that I had a little trouble with Alex’s character. Her constant angst and questioning of her gender identity made her a character I identified with far too much for me to be comfortable with. I also didn’t expect the passages where she experienced self-hatred to impact me that much. But I must say that these reasons make Alex a very human character.
Since the secondary characters are not the focus of the story, they are less developed and therefore I didn’t really get the chance to get attached to them. I did however really enjoy the diversity of their group and the support they show Alex. Tate is the character that won me over the most. He is a sweetheart, a cinnamon roll, and all I wanted to do was protect him. I also love Uriah and I really hope the author can write his story or that we run into him in another book.
I also found the writing fluid and enjoyable to read. This is a novel that I would recommend to people who are questioning their gender/sexual identity, but also to those who want to better understand the doubts and anxieties that people who are questioning can go through.
