Anxious People by Fredrik Backman

5.0

Genre: fiction, mystery
CW: anxiety, depression, hostage situation, suicidal ideation, loss of loved ones through death and suicide.

My first Fredrik Backman book and certainly not my last. This novel was like a beautiful puzzle with 1000 pieces that comes together in the most quizzically beautiful way.

It’s hard to actually describe the plot without spoilers. This is a story about a group of people brought together by an poorly executed bank robbery that turns into a hostage situation. They are all forced to spend long hours with each other and...talk. It turns out no matter our age, origin, sexual orientation, or profession we all have our own anxieties that we grapple with and struggle to share even with those closest to us.

This is a story about how we all live with our anxieties and how we care about each other through all of that. It’s a story about how sharing our emotions with each other can be such a relief of that burden and how bonding with one another can make that anxiety a little bit easier.
