The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas
4.0

This was a really fun book. There is *always* action and something new is always happening. The last classic FRENCH novel I read was Les Miserables by Victor Hugo so I was subconsciously bracing myself for lots of digressions but there were none in this novel! He even states that instead of recounting the whole political situation of the Huguenots at La Rochelle he is going to only tell about the important parts. Because of my history with Les Miserables, I found that comment very amusing. D’Artangon is very headstrong and is a bit annoying in the beginning (even throughout the novel Aramis was always my favorite character), but he grew on me. I reas the Barnes and Nobles translation/edition of the book and the writing was really fluid and easy to read (not to say that it was child’s language). The reason why I don’t give it five stars is that the ending felt pretty rushed. I know there are sequels but the Dumas put in a conclusion and epilogue and he resolved things, but what became of the relationship between the Man of Meung and D’Artagnon I found very annoying.
