Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism by Amanda Montell
challenging
emotional
informative
fast-paced
I love this exploration of how cults build power. It really demystifies cults, and also makes room for the good similar linguistic styles can do for humans. We work best in groups - there is a reason these patterns exists. Still we need to be careful the individual isn't swallowed whole by the collective.
Graphic: Emotional abuse, Domestic abuse, and Child abuse
Actual harmful cults are discussed including the trauma involved. If you are a cult survivor, tread lightly - the book and author are kind and empathetic to cult survivors but the discussion of Jim Jones, Scientology, and Q Anon can get intense.
