The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams

5.0

I enjoyed this play, which visits some of the same people found in Streetcar. But this dream play was extremely personal for Williams. It is said that Laura was like his sister Rose, who was committed to a psychiatric institute and lobotomized with no intervention from Williams. In this piece, Tom carries around the guilt of abandoning Laura as Williams did the guilt for abandoning his own sister. The conventions of the play are ones we now accept as second nature, but they must have been quite jarring and exciting to audiences who had never seen them before.
