Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

2.0

“Happiness is not a possession to be prized, it is a quality of thought, a state of mind.”
Rebecca was a very slow read. Almost nothing of significance happens until that last one hundred pages. I struggled with keeping my interest in reading further mostly because I did not like the narrator at all. All she did was conjure images in her head that were very irrelevant to the arc of the story and of course she was not inherently the most likeable person. Her absolute refusal to acknowledge the reality of new circumstances once she had wed Mr de Winter was a bit lacking in explanation with only her inferior breeding to account for.
There was absolutely no growth to her, good or bad. The story lacks substantial plot and whatever ghastly atmosphere the author tried to create in a wake of Rebecca's death, did very little to alarm or amuse me.
However, I did think the writing was fair and the description of Manderley and the estate was well done. The last few chapters were a bit more intriguing than the former ones.
