Maureen Johnson likes to do this thing where she gives you the tiniest kernels of a mystery throughout the first half of the book to make you keep reading and then just slams you with more clues and the main character having there moment when they realize everything that’s happening. And while I love the format, this time was a little off because Marlowe was just extremely whiny and I think undervaluing herself as a smart character because she made a mistake with the fire.
