beakers 's review for:

The Contortionist by Kathryn Ann Kingsley
5.0

This has become my favorite series of the entire year -- maybe of all time. So I feel compelled to write a review to not only profess my love, but also because I think it's a travesty that it doesn't have more eyes on this since its publish in 2020.

Firstly, Simon Waite is the best MMC I've ever read. The character was so unique. He was hilarious, he unhinged, cute, scary, nerdy -- I understood Cora when she said she needed a therapist because I, too, need a therapist to work out my love for Simon. He is not morally grey, he is morally BLACK. Literally the perfect villain. His backstory, his character growth... it was perfect. I laughed, I cried. No other dark romance MMC even compares to him.

I liked Cora too. Unfortunately for her, she had a lot thrown at her. We had to suffer with her, so to speak. Makes sense for a believable story, but it was heavy at times and not always fun. But man, when she started embracing the way of things -- she was great.

What I loved: Villain gets the girl, the witty banter, the flirting and slow burn, the humor, the creepy murder circus setting, all the characters. It would be easier to list what I didn't like.

What I didn't like: Book could use some extra editing. Book 4 was a little slow IMO because I hate when characters are indecisive -- it leads to a stall in the plot progression and my little Virgo heart hates that. I don't like when characters feel morally righteous (can't kill, this is wrong, blah blah blah) I honestly didn't understand the Harrow Faire as evil POV and it irked me that all of Book 4 was this.
