The Wicked King by Holly Black
5.0
Overall rating: 5/5
This book was even better than the first one. There was so much more political intrigue, betrayals, tension. UGhhhhh I loved it so much. TBH I'm not much in a reviewing mood so I'll try to keep it short while being as descriptive as I can.
Holy Black has probably one of the most intriguing storylines I've ever read. Even though it took me a few days to finish it, every time I picked this book up I was engaged with the story. The family dynamic, the politics, the romantic subplot, and even the world building was something new to observe. It's like every page was walking into a place I've never been before and wanting to absorb everything in fascination.
Jude and Cardan's relationship dynamic was probably my favorite thing about this book. Seeing a mortal girl control a Faerie King was one of the coolest things I've ever read and I liked how Cardan wasn't opposed to her control but also didn't mind being a king either. It was like he was giving it a trial run and letting Jude do a majority of the work until he could see if he actually liked it. And Jude was overthinking like 99% of the book which sometimes drove me crazy but honestly... same LMAO. If I was Jude and had to deal with Cardan's drunken foolishness I'd be the same lol. But I loved how well she fit into being a diplomat and knew when to play at her strengths... girly wasn't only about strength but she also knew how to manipulate and work a court.
Another thing I wanted to talk about was Taryn.... I really don't understand her character.. Before reading this series I was lowkey on her side because she wanted to fit into the world and live out a dream of being a Faerie's Housewife ig but the fact that she saw her sister being used, abused, manipulated, and refused to even stand by her was ridiculous. How she can stand to be with people like Locke and Madoc who hurt her sister, HER TWIN, is beyond me. Locke is an asshole and honestly I hope she's unhappy with him.
Overall, this book was amazing, and again, even better than the second one and I can't wait to finish off the trilogy.
