This started off painfully slow (really? 50 pages about a squash game?), but the pace picked up dramatically in the last 100 pages or so, ending with beautiful and profound reflections by the narrator. I liked the ending enough that I plan to seek out more novels by McEwan... but this may not have been the best one to start with. If I were a less dedicated bookie, I would have given up well before the halfway point.
