Hey, Kiddo: How I Lost My Mother, Found My Father, and Dealt with Family Addiction by Jarrett J. Krosoczka
emotional
tense
slow-paced
5.0
Jarrett shares his experiences growing up with his grandparents after his mom lost herself in drugs and prison. This memoir recountd his childhood and takes a hard look at the complex emotions that he faced. I listened to the audiobook for a while before I realized it was a graphic novel and then I started reading them side by side. The audio naration adds so much to this book, otherwise I might have given this 4 stars instead. It's also fun that he got his whole family (and several teachers) involved in the audiobook!
Graphic: Addiction, Cursing, Drug abuse, Racial slurs, and Grief
Moderate: Miscarriage and Violence
Minor: Death of parent
familial abandonment, absent parent, parent in jail, trauma, emotionally distant caretakers, rejection of a teen who is pregnant, toxic parent-child relationships, a man abandoned a woman he got pregnant
