North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell

5.0

Not knowing much about it beforehand, I didn't quite realise it was going to be so much about the North/South divide, although I definitely should have, given the title. Fascinating to read about the precursor to the modern divide, and I liked that it didn't shy away from including a lot of the specifics of the debates.

Some maddeningly bad communication between some of the characters - I spent a lot of time wanting to shake some sense into them! I did appreciate the fact that they misinterpreted and misunderstood each other so much. A lot of books seem to have characters who can all read each other perfectly and it's just not realistic.

I would definitely recommend this book
