Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates
5.0
Starting this book was a struggle in itself, but once it picked up and I finished it, I am still haunted by it. It won't let up on my mind. While I didn't agree with all of Coates's mind view of the world, I cannot and will not knock his truth. He is a powerful writer, one who I caught wind off when I joined Twitter in 2008 and knew the world was in for a firestorm. With that said, I couldn't help but feel strangled under the narrative of Between the World and Me, but that was what Coates set out to do. And in that regard, I can't help but say, "Job well done, Mr. Coates. Job well done."
Although Coates's lyrical flow among the 152 pages of his letter to his son (among others) firmly reiterated some elephant pill sized truths, there were moments where he lost me like a child who zones out from a sternly, lecturing parent/teacher/professor. This wasn't necessarily a bad thing as it led me to ponder and write a slew of questions and thoughts to ask why that was, how do reconnect, or, most importantly, should I/was I supposed to reconnect?
I will be writing more about this extensively on my blog and will update this review when that feat is done.
