Hummingbird Salamander: A Novel
by Jeff VanderMeer
Hummingbird Salamander begins with an intriguing premise: a woman unexpectedly receives a taxidermy of an extinct hummingbird, which leads her to a mystery surrounding a person named Silvina.
This novel has some great ideas and concepts, and some exciting scenes, but unfortunately it moves too slowly and the writing often drags it down. I was left wishing the book was half as long, and got to the point faster than it did.
This is the third book by VanderMeer I’ve read, after Annihilation and Borne. I enjoyed both of those books and I’d rate them higher than this one, so I’m still a fan. This book just didn’t work for me the way that I hoped.
