One of the reasons I chose to read this book is because I wanted a strong winter read. Throughout the story we get vivid details of Alaska. You can feel the chill down to your bone, the wind whip your face and your numb fingers. You can also imagine the breathtaking views of the mountains, the peaceful flow of the river and the wild flowers that pop up out of the frozen ground in spring. I really enjoyed the amount of detail the author included.
One thing to be aware of as you read is that the point of view changes throughout and time moves quickly between some chapters. I will admit this confused me a few times as I read, causing me to have to go back and re-read. In hindsight, however, I really liked that the author chose this style. Without it I could see having to leave out other details or risk the book being too long. So just be aware of it as you read through.
