Fawkes
by Nadine Brandes
Ok so as a Brit I can definitely say that we all know the story of Guy Fawkes. Right?! I mean if you dont - do you live under a rock?
But do you know the tale with magic and a devastating stone plague? No?! Well then I guess you should go read this immediately!
The story is told from the POV of Thomas Fawkes, his son, a boy with no magic, an embarrassingly famous surname he clearly is not living up to and the plague. Sucks to be him right?!
This book was just awesome! I loved the twist on the classic piece of English history...the magical element was just breathtakingly refreshing. You have command of a colour based on your mask and the only way you can get it is if your parents make you one. Cool right?
The enormous list of characters really made the story for me. Each one brings their own depth and personal element to the story so you aren’t totally focused on the main character 24/7
Plus gunpowder, treason, murder, racism, conspiracies and magic! I mean who wouldn’t want to dive head first into a plot like that!
A fantastically slow paced but amazing read! Plus 17th century London
