City of Golden Shadow by Tad Williams
3.0
I don’t know why exactly, but this book was a struggle to get through. Granted, it’s 943 pages so it’s no walk in the park to begin with. Even so, there was something about this story that made it drag a little. Not enough to call it quits, but just enough that reading it felt like a tiny bit of a chore.
In hindsight, I think there were a few big chunks of this book that were so fantastical that it was hard to keep track of what was going on in the story. The fact that the whole plot centers around virtual reality and the seemingly limitless nature of the internet gave Williams a ton of leeway in terms of the worlds he could create for himself and his readers. Some of the worlds made sense to me, but others were much harder to sort through and make sense of.
Despite the difficulty, I can honestly say that I did like the book. It was paced quite well and I found myself attached to a character or two, which is always a good sign. The whole thing ended on a strange, ginormous cliffhanger (as in, no wrap-up whatsoever), so I’ll have to check out the other three books in the Otherland series to find out how the whole thing shakes out.
Stay tuned.
