All the praise for this book is earned. Frankie and her friends are complex characters, her story is nuanced, and the descriptions of war and its aftermath create a powerful and vivid picture of the women who served in Vietnam without sanitizing it for the reader's comfort.
I appreciate the portrayal of how badly returning veterans were treated and the failure to recognize the service of the nurses and other women serving made adapting to life after the war even harder. Regardless of my opinion about why the US sent troops to Vietnam or how the war was carried out, those who sacrificed years of their lives, their health and safety, and their futures deserve our respect and gratitude.
