V is for Virgin by Kelly Oram
4.0
While the title V is for Virgin might have you thinking of steamy sex scenes, you would be mistaken. However, you would be correct in assuming there’s talk about sex. Or, in the case of this book, about why someone would want to remain a virgin until marriage and how she wants to encourage others to not feel ashamed for doing so or choosing a lifestyle of abstinence.
This was an interesting read for me. I’m years beyond my teen years with all the pressure of ‘hooking up’ with people. But, I can still recall how each year I saw more friends lose their virginity while mine was still intact. Maybe if I’d been part of the popular crowd my choice would have been more noticed. I’m just thankful to have not felt super pressured to give into a boy’s advances during that time. Or, to have the added pressure of social media where classmates can quickly upload a video or photo.
I loved how Kelly had the characters feel believable, to a point. The scenario of Valerie being made fun of for her choice and the sparks flying with rock star Kyle seems a bit more far-fetched then plausible. But, it’s the stretch of the imagination that makes this story more fun than dull. And, with a wonderful message to the overall story, I’m glad it was an enjoyable book to read.
