In Bloom
by Paul Tremblay
In Bloom by Paul Tremblay (the fourth entry in the Creature Feature Collection) is about Heidi, a freelance reporter doing a story on algae blooms along the coast of Cape Cod. She talks to Jimmy, a local who has a tale about the algae that may be truer than anyone in town believes.
This one was good! Jimmy is a delight, and the segment that is the story he's telling is my favorite portion of this short story. The ending is deeply unsettling, and I enjoyed the "we are hurtling toward romance" relationship with Heidi and her roommate. If you're a fan of tall tales that just might prove true, give In Bloom a try!
