Le Problème à trois corps by Cixin Liu

Some great hard sci-fi concepts and a refreshing set of cultural references to China's history, but unfortunately the novel fails to deliver a compelling read as it falls into the many traps of the genre. Characters are mostly one-dimensional with poorly developed motives or narratives, and the writing is really only secondary to the author's excitement at explaining his ideas. There isn't enough to keep the reader intrigued as many drawn-out chapters are overwhelmingly focused on explaining and describing rather than sharing with or involving us.
