Real Estate by Deborah Levy

I feel so grateful to have been able to discover Deborah Levy and then read all three volumes of her Living Autobiography while traveling around Europe alone.  These books will forever be tied to this experience; I felt like I found a new friend.

That being said, I did not connect with Real Estate as much as the others, especially The Cost of Living, which is an absolute favorite of mine.  This book focuses on aging, and realizing that some of the dreams you have clung to for years won't materialize how you imagined.  She discusses "missing" female characters and the male gaze.  It's about how to live your life on your own terms.  What does it mean to call a place home?

I'm looking forward to revisiting this installment when I'm older and more concerned with real estate and staying in one place.  The existential dread of The Cost of Living has disappeared here, but I miss that existentialism.  I don't know, had I read it at a different time in my life, I probably would have hated that (out of fear), too.
