Where the Dead Sit Talking by Brandon Hobson

5.0

Ugh. This one felt super personal. I haven't really ever read a book that is set in the same remote part of rural Oklahoma I'm from (I'm the same exact age as the protagonist and grew up in literally the next town over), and many of the characters and settings felt all too familiar. The sort of distant, traumatized voice, desperately trying to remain unengaged while faced with a mysterious and dark environment, prone to casual and unexplained violence that never seems to trigger a consequence...it hit too close to home. Reading it hurt, although I'm glad for it.
