Im Wald by Nele Neuhaus
4.0

A body is discovered during an arson and quickly two more deaths follow - a terminally ill woman and an old pastor. It turns out that the cases are connected to the 42 year old disappearance of Bodenstein's best friend Artur and pet fox Maxi. For Bodenstein this is an unusually personal case and he knows the whole village - and it is clear that many know more than they know, but refuse to speak.

This is unusually gruesome. Quite typical Nele Neuhaus, in other words. Bodenstein expresses that his grief for the lost fox was greater than for his friend. In a sense I can relate. Grief for lost pets is under-valued and almost a little taboo. I also found the fate of the fox just as bad as for poor Artur.

I am glad that my German is still at a level where I can read in the original language, even if it's slow going. It's quite recent that this series started to be translated, starting with "Snow White must die" - book number 4.
