Violence Girl: East L.A. Rage to Hollywood Stage, a Chicana Punk Story by Alice Bag

4.0

This book isn't perfect, and reads more like a set of intersecting blog posts that anything else. That said, there's no doubt that Alice Bag has lived an interesting life. I most appreciated her childhood stories and how she found her people in the punk scene that really helped her feel at most herself. Yet, you combine that with her social activism and awareness, set against her own family history and this is a great read.

I kept finding myself saying "just one more chapter.." and reading 10 more. Since each one is about the length of a medium blog post, it makes it feel like you're making rapid progress as you go. Just remember that stories will sometimes circle back on one another and you'll see friends show up here and there in different sides of the same tale. I do wish she'd had an editor, there's a couple places where characters/people change names mid-stream and it would have been a tighter book overall, but how punk rock would that be?
