Latecomers by Anita Brookner

4.0

Feels old-fashioned and also entirely relevant. Hartmann and Fibich are as different as two men can be, having come from similar tragic circumstances. Hartmann skims the surface of life, enjoying the present and not looking back; Fibich is haunted by the past he can not change and believes that if he can just understand it he could be happy. How they navigate their lifelong friendship and intertwined lives is the meat of this book.

Recommended for book groups. Good discussion could be had about approaches to life, friendship, and marriage.
