The Sluts by Dennis Cooper
4.0
an absolutely prophetic, on the pulse piece of work that accurately saw what the social media era of the internet was in its infancy and what it would quickly become. the depersonalization, the devolution of communication, the mythologization and everyone wanting a piece of the latest Thing...... whew!! that being said, this was also deeply upsetting and disgusting and as much as i enjoyed it i could never in good faith conscious recommend it so someone nor do i ever want to read it ever again. vulgar, inhumane, deprived - exactly what the worst parts of online spaces bring out in people.
sometimes i felt like cooper maybe leaned too hard into the brutality that it started to outweigh the point he was making, but that last chapter hit like a gut punch. i'm not normally a fan of epistolary works, but wowww the technical talent here was palpable
