Bitter by Akwaeke Emezi

5.0

Bitter is a stunningly crafted novel. It is rich and authentic, diving deep into themes of racism, class and revolution. But don't let the seriousness scare you away. Emezi has also created a story that has an incredible cast of characters, each as strong as they are flawed; down-to-earth but filled to the brim with personality. And the world-building is more than enough reason for any reader to pick up. This is urban fantasy at its very best. It's a blend of incredible whimsy with genuine livelihood.

trigger warnings: racism, classism, blood depiction, death of a friend, eye mutilation
