I knew getting in this book that this was part of a series, which probably makes expectations a bit different. I found this tome to be an excellent introduction to the characters, but a bit poor in happenings and maybe even background to understand the world in which this story is set. I find Kelsea and her Guard, as well as the many characters whose path she crosses in this first volume to be well sketched out and endearing, in the sense that you want to know more. As a stand alone however, the volume is a bit lacking in depth, as the story really does not get very far.
