Juniper & Thorn by Ava Reid

Did not finish book. Stopped at 75%.
This book started out promisingly- the setting, central characters, and atmosphere are all quite good. I am a fan of gothic fantasy fiction, and Juniper and Thorn seems to follow in the footsteps of genre classics like Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber collection (a personal favorite of mine).

Unfortunately, I found the male love interest painfully dull, and the overwrought consummation of the romance subplot, occurring directly after the reveal that a heretofore sinister character is (what else!) a gay pedophile, firmly killed my interest in this book.

My issues with this book are largely personal, and I think readers newer to the gothic fantasy genre, and who are less sensitive to homophobia in their entertainment, might still enjoy this book.
