The book accomplished one goal for me — it helped me expand my sense of “we” to include Liz Cheney because we share some important things. And not reduce her to a “they” whose political agenda I don’t share. I think if there’s a way out of this polarized mess we’ve gotten into it has to include that.

So. Liz and I both believe in rule of law. We both don’t want violence in upcoming elections or governance. We both believe that telling truth is essential to finding a way forward. We value democracy and believe it’s worth sacrificing for.

I appreciated her detailed account of what she learned when and how she responded. What worked and what surprised her (repeatedly) when it didn’t.

I am disappointed she didn’t take the opportunity to describe cross-party collaboration. (Maybe there wasn’t as much as it looked like had to go into those orchestrated, powerful hearings?). To hear her tell it she and her husband Phil basically did all the thinking and the Dems were astute enough to support their ideas. Also she seems to believe her Republican colleagues began behaving irrationally on Jan 7. Who voted Trump for years,Liz? He didn’t just become a different man after the election. But the only thing she seems to hold against him is the Lie that is completely in character with his previous behavior. All right I still have some ways to go being a respectful “we” with her and not wanting to rant.

Glad I read it.
