To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo

This book is clearly loved by the majority of readers, and I had similar hopes for myself. But it was not to be. Something about the writing style made this book a real slog to get through. It felt very static, competently written, but without a strong current of words to sail along on. The "badass" characters were so brutal and savage... until they weren't. Couldn't Lira have made at least one serious attempt at murder? Other aspects of the book also turned out to be too underdeveloped for my tastes (and for a book pushing 350 pages). The world of this book had the potential to be interesting if we had actually learned anything about it. There is no insight into why Elian is so determined not to be a prince. The banter was funny at first, but got old because that was all there was. I found the romance tough to buy into, the ending even more so. Sometimes things just don't work out between you and a book, and this was one of those times.
