The Red Umbrella
by Christina Diaz Gonzalez
This book was phenomenal. It is an amazing story about a young girl and her brother living in Cuba during the rise of Castro. The focus of this book is a fictionalized account of Operation Pedro Pan, which was a mass exodus of children out of Cuba to the United States. It is history that I had never heard of before and something that I think all students should read about. This book was extremely well written and if I ever find myself using my middle school license I will be sure to read it to my students.
