Hidden Empire by Kevin J. Anderson

4.0

Structurally similar to Peter Hamilton's Black Dawn series in terms of lots and lots of separate individual characters running in parallel, this does feel flimsier in terms of back-story and overall depth. The pace of the story picks up dramatically towards the end but a large space battle is over and done with in just a few short pages - events to get them there happen quickly and details are short and assumed. Some characters I wish had more time to tell their whole story, the Colicos' for example. I found their story fascinating but there's too little substance as the main events race onwards.

Still, I look forward to reading the next in the series. Overall this rates just below 4* but somewhere above 3*.
