This book was quietly devastating and the story flowed like a river. I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.

The book doesn’t have much a plot after the first section, but Ann Patchett does such beautiful character work that you really don’t need it. Every character has a distinct voice and purpose in the story that helps to move things along.

I read some reviews saying readers didn’t like Rose, but that felt like the whole point. Rose has some redeeming qualities, but she’s deeply flawed and she spends the whole book trying to get everyone else to hate her as much as she hates herself.

Sister Evangeline and Mother Corinne see the best and worst in Rose, respectively, and represent the internal struggle that Rose is constantly battling.

Overall I thought the premise of the book was brilliant and really enjoyed the journey each character took us on.
