I like mermaid tales and so on. When I first read the summary of the novel, I was already interested in reading it also with the mythological background inserted here.
I will immediately write down what I feel and think after reading this novel.
First, this story is about Simi's struggle with her new role as Yemoja's daughter, Mami Wata. Assigned to gather the souls that disappeared in the ocean. Until finally she found Kola who fell from the ship with injuries. She thought she would deliver Kola's soul but it turns out that Kola's soul is still there and bound to Kola's body. Live. And that was also the beginning of all the trips that Simi would take, because from the start, Simi's job was only to gather souls and give her blessings to Yemoja to take that souls on their journey. Saving Kola is a violation of the decree that has been given.
Afterwards, Simi feels responsible for it, she knows she was wrong but she has her own principles, but she also can't betray all Mami Wata and Yemoja who gave her a chance to come back. For that she and Kola work together, traveling with their respective goals and with the same target, Esu.
From her journey in asking for forgiveness from Olodumare with Kola, she learns about friendship, inner turmoil about her feelings as Mami Wata and her love, also about a sacrifice.
