Dracula by Bram Stoker

5.0

I recommend finding an edition of *Dracula* that is from a reputable publisher and is professionally annotated. The book is chiefly set in fin de siècle England, even though Dracula is traditionally associated with Transylvania. When *Dracula* was published, it was a contemporary novel of the British Empire near its pinnacle of power. An American audience in the 21st Century will almost certainly miss cultural themes without the assistance of an annotated version. Furthermore, Central Europe was a very different place back in the 19th Century, something that may not be appreciated by a modern American audience. Much of the culture would again be missed if not for the work of a thoughtful editor.

Unfortunately I was not able to find a satisfactory edition of *Dracula* in the Kindle Store. Most of them appear to be simple conversions of the public domain text that was written for an audience of another time and place. Even more unfortunate, some of the reviews for these Kindle editions complain of formatting issues and extensive typographic errors.

I read the *Longman Cultural Edition* of *Dracula*, (ISBN 13: 978-0-205-63263-3) that I picked up at a used book store.
