A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow

4.0

Trigger Warnings for the book: description of attempted suicide by a child, racist situations, police violence against Black women, and protestors.

A Song Below Water is a hard book to read. It shows firsthand what kind of awful things Black girls have to deal with on a daily basis, not just from everyone else in the world, but their own families too. Most times they can rely on no one but themselves and occasionally other Black women. Effie and Tav have an incredible friendship, a sisterhood that goes beyond blood. And with the world turning against them both, they only have each other. A Song Below Water presents a lot of allegories to showcase violence against Black women in this country.

I did have trouble with the writing style of this book. The pace is slow and there's a lot of introspection between dialog - which was really distracting. I had to switch to an audiobook half way through and I liked that much better.
