  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Loveable characters? Yes

5.0

I honestly don't know why I was nervous about this. I felt like it could go one of two ways, be terrible or be amazing and surprise, surprise, Ali absolutely nailed this one. I give Ali so much credit for writing outside of her typical genre.

I know she has received criticism about writing the same book formula for a number of her books, but the haters can't hate anymore because Ali has created a very unique paranormal romance. One of my favourite things about vampire/werewolf romances is how authors take their own liberties on what the "rules" of vampirism versus what is human misconception.

Misery and Lowe are everything. I loved these two characters so much.

I'm trying to write words that make for a valid/legitimate review, but all I keep coming up with is I loved it! I love them! So please bear with me...

I found the way Misery's backstory and childhood was affected by the political turmoil between species an interesting take on a peace treaty.

The romance between Misery and Lowe was a perfect marriage of convenience, enemies-to-lovers. They are the whole package. The chemistry, the spice, the love - all of it. Perfection.

Although I had my suspicions about who were actually the enemy in this book, I didn't actually predict the ending the way it panned out. Idk if that's because I devoured it so fast I didn't give myself time to consider, or what but it was nice reading a book that had an ending I didn't already suspect.

I also LOVE that Ali left it open ended with the possibility for a sequel?!

I listened to the audiobook, because I'm waiting for my Afterlight special edition to come in and wanted to read it right away. Narrators Therese Plummer and Will Damron crushed it. Their performance was flawless and it was a joy listening to them. Because I couldn't get enough of this book, I actually listened to it even faster than my normal 2x speed and these narrators did such a great job there were no issues with their cadence at 2.25x speed.
