This novel kept me engaged from sentence one. Eleanor’s journey dealing with what I can only imagine is insurmountable grief after her mother’s death has put herself into a self destructive mode that she’s not aware she’s in. In two other timelines, we see how the history of her family and how they’ve lived has shaped her childhood and life. I loved every moment of the story-telling in this book, I cannot relate to the stories of immigration personally, but every single book I read is so eye opening and unique. You can never read enough non-fiction or fiction of the stories of immigrants and Elysha Chang tells hers with a poignant beauty and hint of hilarity.
