When God Was a Rabbit
by Sarah Winman
Because I loved Still Life I thought I'd give this book a try but unfortunately I really, really didn't love it. It's weird to say this but this novel feels a bit like it's meandering about pointlessly without really knowing what to say while spewing some weird magical realism elements, and lovey dovey (chosen) family harmony amid horrible trauma. I really had to fight to keep reading and probably only finished it because I didn't have a lot of other books on this long bus ride. It's weird to realise how one book by an author can feel so amazing and another one by the same author fall so flat.
