SpoilerThis was a very interesting concept, and I had no idea from start to finish where the story was going to end up. The comparison between the men studying Solaris and those sent on religious pilgrimages was really striking. Men tend to explore not to seek knowledge and understanding, but to impose their own beliefs and worldview onto their subjects. This is evident in the way Kris chooses to stay on Solaris at the end of the novel in hopes of being able to relive and re-do his past despite the planet itself having learned all it could from him. To truly learn from Solaris, Kris must learn to turn inward rather than closing his eyes to the truth of his own nature and that of his alien counterpart.
