Men We Reaped by Jesmyn Ward
5.0

I’ve been staring at the blank page of this review for over a week, trying to find the words to convey the enormous weight of Jesmyn’s story. To express how her words sat like lead in my stomach when I realized that all the grief I’ve felt in my life is a mere fraction of hers, because my privilege made it that way.

Ward tells her story of growing up in the rural South, alongside the stories of five young men she loved and lost due to the oppressive and unjust systems we’ve created. Every chapter highlights the persistent inequality and racial disparities that created her reality, and the reality of countless Black people in America. A story so painfully raw and exquisitely written, I could feel the tumultuous waves of her grief crashing through the pages.
