Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr
3.0

I picked this up when Amazon touted it as a Twilight readalike, and I drooled -- a lot -- over the gorgeous cover. I found the premise intriguing: 17-year-old modern girl Aislinn is pursued by the faery king Keenan, who has been searching 900 years for the mortal girl who will be his queen. But he gets more than he bargained for: the reader knows from the get-go that Aislinn has the Sight and has been able to see faeries all her life, and knows their vicious nature (no Tinkerbells here). Also, she's already got a mortal boy, Seth, in love with her.

So, in spite of all this promise, I was a little disappointed. This was a potentially tasty story that took too long to get going, then did too much telling and not enough showing. I found myself able to see the great story, but wishing it was told by Libba Bray or Francesca Lia Block. Still, it's Melissa Marr's first book, and I'd definitely keep an eye on her. This is a good urban fairy tale with a dark setting and a love triangle to tantalize those Edward-or-Jacob followers. Which is better: a pierced and tattooed human totally devoted to protecting you from evil fairies, or a glowing, powerful faery king who has been waiting nine centuries to make you a queen? It's a dilemma that kept me from abandoning this book.
