The Elite
by Kiera Cass
This is the 2nd book in this series. In it Maxon, the prince, has to choose a wife from the 6 remaining girls. America, his top choice, also has to make a choice. She has to choose between the prince and Aspen, a boy she loves from back home. Fortunately (or unfortunately?) the prince isn't aware that Aspen is working for him as a guard now in his palace. I have to admit being very nervous many times as America snuck away to see Aspen in an effort to make her choice. I was waiting for her to be severely punished for doing so. I am not overly fond of books with love triangles. This one is tricky because I liked both choices. Except for my annoyance at the risks America was taking, I enjoyed it.
There seems to be more of an effort in the 2nd book to deal with harder issues. There are rebel groups attacking the palace and Maxon and America work to try to figure out how to solve the problem. I also came to really dislike the king and cheer as America found ways to thwart him and do the right thing despite him. I also liked her friendship with some of the other girls. Even though it took on a bit deeper issues it is still just a light read.
