The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie

5.0

I thought:
I've spent time this year attempting to find books that contain a nonwhite male protagonist and this title kept coming up. Our school is primarily upper middle class and white and so I was hoping to expand their horizons a bit with a new title.

I have to admit, I loved this book. It's one of the best things I have read this year. It has excellent analysis on hope and forgiveness as well as an intricate look into Indian/Native American poverty and alcoholism. I grew up close to an Indian reservation and have seen how true this actually is, and how unfortunate.

I think Arnold is completely relatable and easy to like as the protagonist. The book seems pretty similar to stream of consciousness but not quite. It has great pictures that add to the text and he deals well with the struggles of adolescence and much bigger issues.

For school:
I could use this as a read aloud but would need to edit out alot of the teenage boy stuff. Additionally the word fag is used and with more mature classes I think I would keep it in with no worries. I would recommend this to students who are reluctant readers because the hook is in the dirty parts, but also students mature enough to handle some dirty language.
